Net Tuition and Mandatory Fees in this report are the average of the difference between individual students' per-term tuition and mandatory fees, and any gift aid they received (scholarships, grants, fellowships, fee remissions). The result is the remainder of tuition and mandatory fees that needs to be paid with educational loans, work income or savings. If a student received no gift aid, his or her net tuition/fees are equal to the assessed tuition/fees.
Use this report if you need to . . .
- Compare average net tuition and mandatory fees across academic terms and across IU campuses.
- Compare the percent change over time with the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), i.e. the inflation rate.
- Look up the average net tuition and mandatory fees for students in particular areas of study.
How should this be reported?
In general, figures from this report are only for IU-internal use, with the exception of use in the IU Bicentennial Strategic Metrics. This is to reduce public confusion with the more public IPEDS Average Net Price figures. This report reflects actual net tuition and mandatory fees, while IPEDS shows hypothetical net IPEDS costs of attendance (including tuition, mandatory fees, room, board, and books/supplies). Also, this report reflects net tuition/fees for all enrolled students (including those who received no gift aid), while IPEDS Average Net Price is only calculated for degree-seeking, fall census, first-time undergraduates who received gift aid.
