Completions Report Overview Video Transcript

Welcome to the Completions Report overview. This video is meant to give you an overview of the Tableau dashboard that presents information about degree conferrals at IU from a variety of perspectives. This overview will cover the purpose of the Completions report, how to navigate there, a brief overview of the different views within the dashboard, the data sources, and refresh cycle. The purpose of the Completions report is to provide information about degrees awarded. It includes data for all campuses and degree levels for the past 11 fiscal and academic years. Data can be analyzed at a high level, campus school, and at a more detailed level plan sub plan.

All views allow for disaggregation of the data by various student characteristics. To find the report from the Institutional Analytics homepage, go to the finding data menu in the upper left corner of the page. Select outcomes, degrees, completions. From here, you will find two versions of the report, an IU internal version which requires CAS authentication and a public version. When you open the report, you will find the read me page, which contains a brief description of all the data dashboards in the workbook. It can be helpful to review this before exploring the data. The next view to the right of the read me page is the completions tab, which displays a tabular view of student degrees by campus, degree level, and various attributes. This report contains various parameters throughout the dashboard that allow for customization of the data. Additionally, this dashboard contains global filters, which means that the parameter selections made on one tab automatically carry over to all views within this dashboard. One of these global parameters is select attribute, which allows you to separate the information by any of the student characteristics or other items available in this drop down.

Next, let's look at the completions trends view, which displays student degree over time in three separate charts. The stacked bar chart shows the total number of degrees awarded per year for each degree level. The bar chart shows the percent change in degrees awarded for each year compared to the previous year. The line chart at the bottom shows a trend line for student degree data by selected student attributes. Now let's look at the completions by all plans duplicated view. This report displays student degrees by campus, school, program, plan, and sub plan. It can also display more granular data by using the select attribute parameter. This report is different from all the other reports in this dashboard because it shows a duplicated count of degrees. This means that for each degree, it counts every major that's associated with the degree. So for students that have double or triple majors, their degrees will be counted two or three times based on the number of majors they had. For this reason, the overall numbers viewed here will be greater than what is shown in other views.

The next view, completions by Group school, displays a tabular view of student degrees by school over time by campus. This view corresponds to the previous one in that it shows degree information down to school, program, plan, and sub plan levels by clicking on the plus sign when you hover over school name. However, this view does not show a duplicated count of degrees. Only the primary plan one is counted and displayed for any given degree. Now, let's examine the completions by school and degree view. This view also displays a taular view of student degrees by school, program, and plan. However, it allows for filtering based on student group. The completions by CIP view is next and displays degrees on the two character CIP code descriptions by campus and degree level in a tabular and graphical form for a single year at a time. In this view, you may use the CIP description to filter the two digit CIP families of interest and further customize your search by all the other common filters. Now, let's look at the completions by GPA view, which shows information based on students overall degree GPA. This view has a bar chart that shows the average GPA by school and a line chart that shows median and average GPA trends over time. This view also contains an honors type selection parameter that allows for filtering data and analyzing trends based on honor types such as Highest distinction, Hutton Honors College, and General Honors Program.

The next tab in this dashboard is the Bachelors By Honors View. This view displays a bar chart depicting the count and percentage of Bachelor's degree recipients who received honors compared to the remaining degrees over time. Using the Honors display filter allows you to further examine the trends for specific honor types. The last tab in the Completions dashboard is the Bachelor Honors By School Group view, which provides a heat map displaying Bachelor's degree trends over time for any campus or school. This view also contains an honors selection parameter that allows for filtering data and analyzing trends based on types of honor. The definitions views provide explanations of various data and terms used throughout the dashboard. Data definitions are also viewable by placing your mouse over the hover for definitions link located at the top of each tab. The last page in this dashboard is the data sources and refresh Schedule tab. Here you will find a list of the data sources used to create the dashboard, as well as the refresh schedule for the data sources and the report. For this dashboard, you will notice that the data behind this tableau dashboard uses an Oracle degree snapshot taken three times per year, and the report itself gets updated twice a year in August and October. If you would like more information about this overview or any other dashboards, contact our office at IUIA at indiana dot edu.
